Forest Garden Plants for Trøndelag
Stephen Barstow talks about his favourite forest garden plants. His own forest
garden (The Edible Garden) in Malvik is over 40 years old. He tells how the garden
became a food forest and how the place today contains a large biodiversity.
A forest garden is made up of different layers: a) tall trees; b) low trees; c) bushes; d)
perennial vegetables and e) ground cover plants; an overview of suitable plants for
Trøndelag in each layer will be given.
Stephen Barstow is a British-Norwegian plant nerd, writer and expert on perennial
vegetables. He is known for the book Around the World in 80 Plants and his work
internationally to promote edible, perennial plants. Barstow is a central figure in
KVANN (Norwegian Seed Savers) and has created an allium garden with over 400
varieties and species at the Ringve Botanical Garden in Trondheim. He is particularly
known for his extensive collection of perennial vegetables and for having made a
salad with over 530 different species!
